The ALS-RTC is an applied, interdisciplinary center that supports sponsored research, program evaluation, policy analysis, technology transfer, and training.

The ALS-RTC was established in 2005 as part of the Sociology Department within Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Housed at the Dixon University Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the ALS-RTC focuses its efforts on public and nonprofit sectors operating within the Commonwealth. The ALS-RTC, along with faculty and students associated with IUP’s Administration and Leadership Studies Ph.D. program, is committed to working closely with nonprofit state and federal government agencies in such areas as transportation, labor, health, welfare, business and industry, higher education, and local and state government. The ALS-RTC strives to provide value-added services to the Commonwealth while enriching the teaching and educational experience of its students and faculty.

The ALS Research and Training Center provides the following services:

  • Offers and facilitates agency-oriented training and conference activities
  • Carries out coordination and training services for Pennsylvania state agencies
  • Provides support for research education and outreach efforts
  • Provides assistance to faculty, students, and staff in the development of seminars and workshops pertaining to administration and leadership studies
  • Develops training and education programs aimed at addressing knowledge gaps for specific target audiences as determined through needs assessment surveys, focus groups, etc.
  • Provides easy access to ALS-RTC documents, reports, and relevant educational materials for educators and professionals
  • Provides expertise in the fields of research, program evaluation, training, and administration and leadership
  • Participates in local, state, regional, and national conferences
  • Identifies, plans, and implements new research projects
  • Through funded projects, provides graduate students with support and assistantship opportunities
  • Builds partnerships with and among nonprofit, government, and research communities
  • Promotes interdisciplinary studies on specific themes and develops contacts among researchers across geographical areas to foster an exchange of information and to encourage the development of research and training activities in the areas of leadership, organizational and natural environments, economics, health, sociology, social policy, and technological advancement and diffusion
