What is Lavender Graduation?
This ceremony congratulates and celebrates the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (referred to as LGBT) community undergraduate seniors and graduate students. It's an opportunity to recognize and celebrate graduate achievements and contributions to the LGBT community and/or the Indiana community in general.
All graduates who participate will receive a lavender cord that may be worn during the Spring Commencement and/or department ceremonies.
Why should I participate?
Lavender Graduation recognizes you as a member of the LGBT community and rewards you for your accomplishments while a student at IUP. It also serves as a formal setting for sharing “goodbyes.”
Who attends Lavender Graduation?
Everyone is welcome! Students, faculty, staff, alumni, family, and friends may attend the ceremony. If you have individuals you would like to invite, please invite them to attend. No tickets are necessary.
Will I miss my “real” graduation?
No, you will not. Lavender Graduation is held prior to Spring Commencement. You may attend both events.
Do I have to be an LGBT leader or extensively involved with LGBT issues?
No, you do not. Lavender Graduation is held to celebrate all sorts of achievements by LGBT and ally students.
What should I wear to the ceremony?
Caps and gowns are not necessary for this ceremony! Please wear “business casual” dress.
