About Our Faculty

Safety Sciences harness lab

HANDS-ON EDUCATION In our construction lab, you’ll learn from professors like Eric Nelson (left) how scaffolding goes up, ways to avoid falls, and how to respond to an injury if one occurs. Nelson, a certified safety professional by the BCSP, has work experience in general industry and consulting.

Bringing real-world experience into the classroom

There are more than 20 Safety Sciences faculty, 11 of whom are full-time. They bring to the classroom their professional experience in iinsurance, oil, chemicals, textiles, energy, explosives, mining, steel, consulting, manufacturing, and more industries. All faculty have appropriate SHE certifications.

  • Our professors are active in safety sciences practice, research, and publishing.
  • Their focus is on you, their student. Take our approach to advising, for example. Every student works with the same advisor for four years. You’re required to meet for advisement every semester, and you can’t take classes until you’ve done so. This isn’t just a pro forma meeting. We’re interested in supporting your progress!
  • Safety Sciences is one of only two departments at IUP that have their own career fair. An average of 45 companies come to the Safety Sciences Career Fair each year, and it’s here that we place you in co-ops, internships, or full-time positions.
