The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing at IUP is designed for nurses interested in pursuing a career in academia with a research focus on nursing education.

Graduates will integrate knowledge from nursing and related disciplines as they assume leadership roles in diverse educational environments.

Format

  • Cohort model: Students begin the program as a group and take all required courses together
  • Courses offered two Fridays per month during afternoon and evening hours
  • Coursework completion in eight semesters by taking two courses per semester, summers included (students may need to pursue two semesters at full-time study, if elective credits are needed).

Tuition

$416.00 per graduate credit (2011–2012 academic year for Pennsylvania residents). Visit IUP’s Office of the Bursar for additional information.

Applying

Nurses seeking admission to the Ph.D. in Nursing program must have a master’s degree in nursing or a related field. The following items must be submitted to IUP’s School of Graduate Studies and Research for admission consideration:

  • Application form
  • $50 application fee (nonrefundable)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Signed and dated statement of career and academic goals. Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) applicants are asked to identify their professional goals and research area of interest, a summation of their achievements within their field of practice, and a summary of their research abilities.
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, including those institutions from which a degree was not obtained.
  • Recent, official GRE scores, including analytical writing. For information about taking the GRE at IUP, contact IUP’s Career Development Center by calling 724-357-4994.
  • Nursing license
  • Current Curriculum Vitae

Completed applications are forwarded from IUP’s School of Graduate Studies and Research to the Department of Nursing and Allied Health for review. Selected applicants will be invited by the Department of Nursing and Allied Health for an interview.
