The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act states that once a student registers at an institution of higher education (IUP) his/her educational record belongs to him/her.
The law further states that the student has the right to control disclosure of his/her educational record (even to parents). IUP has implemented a Student Record Release Authorization, beginning Fall 2009. This is the result of input and work on the part of the A-Deans, Student Operations Group, the Registrar’s Office and Information Technology over the past six months. This real-time, electronic authorization is accessed through URSA, by students, faculty, applicable administrators and employees. Granting third party access to educational records remains the students’ right and utilizing this electronic authorization is entirely up to the student.
Thorough documentation for this authorization can be found on the Registrar’s website, under Student Record Release Authorization. E-mail communiqués are being sent out to all current IUP students, faculty and applicable administrators and employees regarding this electronic Student Record Release Authorization. After you have read this documentation, if you have any questions, contact the Registrar’s Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 724-357-2217.
