Department of Philosophy

Plato and Aristotle

Welcome to the Philosophy Department!

If your college experience finds you craving an intellectual challenge, philosophy may well be right for you. It is a demanding and rigorous discipline that has been around for more than two thousand years.

Philosophers think clearly and precisely about many of the deepest questions we can ask about our world, questions about the nature of reality, the nature and limits of human knowledge, fundamental principles of ethics, and the foundations of justice and human rights.

Students who take philosophy courses gain an appreciation of the intellectual heritage of Western thought and have an opportunity to continue a discussion with many of history's greatest thinkers. The practice of philosophy encourages debate, open mindedness, clear thinking and writing, and critical engagement with historical and contemporary writers and issues. Philosophical training will sharpen your mind and enrich your life.
