MA-TESOL Admissions Information

Applicants who seek admission to the Master of Arts in TESOL need to meet the general IUP institutional requirements as well as the specific M.A. in TESOL program requirements.

1. IUP Institutional Requirements

To learn about graduate admissions at IUP in general, candidates to the M.A. in TESOL program should go to the School of Graduate Studies and Research to access:

2. M.A. in TESOL Program Requirements

In addition to meeting IUP’s general graduate admissions requirements, candidates to the M.A. in TESOL program should be aware of the following:

  • Candidates are expected to have at least a 3.0 GPA (B average) preferably in a relevant field of study such as TESOL, ESL, EFL, applied linguistics, second/foreign language, linguistics, English, composition, literature, education, etc.
  • Candidates are not required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT), but may submit either to bolster their applications.
  • Candidates who are speakers of English as an additional language are required to submit with their applications a minimum TOEFLscore of 500 (600 is considered competitive) paper-based (PBT), 230 computer-based (CBT), 88 Internet-based (iBT), a minimum TWE (TOEFL Test of Written English) score of 5.0, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 (6.5 is considered competitive).

All applications to the M.A. in TESOL program will be assessed according to the following admissions criteria:

  • Academic record and other evidence of academic ability: Your grade average and your grades in TESOL-related subjects will be reviewed. Your letters of recommendation will also be considered.
  • Quality of the personal statement of goals: You may include in it a rationale for selecting TESOL and the IUP M.A. in TESOL program and an explanation of the relevance of your academic and professional background to your graduate studies, as well as a statement of your academic and professional goals.
  • Disciplinary background: All of your credentials will be reviewed for educational and professional activities that prepare you for studies and work in the field of TESOL.
  • Letters of recommendation: These must be individually written texts and not template checklists. They are reviewed for the evidence they provide about the applicant’s academic, scholarly, teaching, and other professional accomplishments and abilities, as well as for his/her general human, social, communication, and other related skills.
  • Teaching/professional experience: In your resume and/or cover letter, you may list your teaching experiences, as well as papers, presentations, and other forms of participation in professional events
  • Language proficiency (only for speakers of English as an additional language): See requirements listed above.

3. M.A. in TESOL Application Instructions

To apply to the M.A. in TESOL program, please submit the following materials to the IUP School of Graduate Studies and Research:

  • Application Form – available at Graduate Admissions
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended, even if a degree was not obtained from a particular institution
  • Signed and dated personal statement of academic and career goals
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • TOEFL or IELTS score (only for speakers of English as an additional language)
  • Nonrefundable $50 application fee
