Dr. Swauger's research interests are in sociology of gender, work, and family. Specifically, she has published and presented multiple research manuscripts on how gender, race, and social class influence adolescent girls’ aspiration formation. She is also interested in feminist qualitative research methods and conducting research with vulnerable populations, including children. Dr. Swauger has implemented several service learning courses helping undergraduate and graduate students engage with local and global communities. She serves the university as chair of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women and as a Women’s Studies Committee member, is on the Sociology Department Masters and Faculty Development Committees, and is a faculty advisor to SAGE (Students Advocating Gender Equity), Alpha Kappa Delta Sociological Honor’s Society, Sociology Club, and Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.  She also serves on the Board of Directors of Gwen’s Girls, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization that serves adolescent girls.
