Thousands braved unseasonably cold weather for the Commencement ceremony on May 9, 2010, in Miller Stadium.
Glenn Cannon, former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster operations and a 1971 graduate of IUP, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the ceremony and served as the keynote speaker. Cannon is senior vice president for Hillard Heintze, a strategic security advisors group.

A graduate from Commencement didn’t appear to be bothered by unseasonably cold weather as he offered a celebratory wave after receiving his diploma. All graduates were recognized by name and congratulated on stage by President Tony Atwater and members of the platform party, and they received a keepsake diploma cover, available only to students participating in the ceremony. The practice of naming all graduates was initiated by Atwater several years ago.
A total of 1,934 graduates earning 1,512 bachelor’s degrees, 366 master’s degrees, forty-five doctorates, and eleven associate degrees were eligible to participate in the ceremony. Jessica Sabol, of Morrisdale, a graduate of IUP’s Robert E. Cook Honors College, was the student speaker.
