Picnics in the Grove

Sunny Start — IUP’s annual Picnics in the Grove began June 2. Picnics continue, weather permitting, every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Oak Grove through August 4, 2010. Special buffet lines are new this year. Photo by Keith Boyer.

President Atwater Resigns
Tony Atwater will resign as president of IUP, effective June 30, 2010, to assume a leadership role with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, a national professional association for public universities.
Interim President Selected
The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Board of Governors has selected David Werner as interim president for IUP. Werner, a former chancellor of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, served as IUP’s interim provost during much of the 2007–2008 academic year.
Rafoth Named University Professor
Dr. Bennett Rafoth, Department of English, has been selected as IUP’s 2010–2011 University Professor.
2010 Convocation
Ben Rafoth, the 2010–2011 University Professor, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the 2010 Freshman Convocation, planned for August 29.
Golf Team Makes History in NCAA Championship
The golf team finished tenth—its highest finish in school history—in the NCAA Division II championship, which concluded May 21, 2010, in Noblesville, Ind. Members of the baseball and softball teams have also earned recent honors.
Harris Wins Third National Championship
IUP’s Nafee Harris won his third national championship in the long jump and Maddy Outman finished third in the heptathlon on May 27, 2010, at the NCAA Division II outdoor meet in Charlotte, N.C.
Honoring One of Our Own
A bronze plaque was unveiled May 21, 2010, identifying the residence hall (formerly the Suites on Maple West) as the MG Rodney D. Ruddock AUS (ret.) Residence Hall.
Warm Sentiments, Frosty Weather
Thousands braved unseasonably cold weather for the Commencement ceremony on May 9, 2010, in Miller Stadium.
Preparing for Transitions
More than 150 people attended the fourth annual IUP Cares program on April 30, 2010.
Siemens Endows Fund for Research
IUP has received a $30,000 donation from Siemens Industry, Inc., to establish a fund for undergraduate research in the sciences.
Serving Others, Serving Self
A full house was on hand for the third annual President’s Commission on the Status of Women at IUP conference, held May 19, 2010, at the Hadley Union Building.
