B.S. in Nutrition, Culinary Dietetics

The Culinary Dietetics Track (Didactic Program in Dietetics, DPD) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND; phone 312-899-0040, ext. 5400) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Drive, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995. The completion of this program prepares students to apply for a ACEND-accredited supervised practice program (dietetic internship) en route to becoming a registered dietitian. A registered dietitian is eligible to be a licensed dietitian nutritionist in Pennsylvania.

The Culinary Dietetics major is one of only a few in the country. This track uniquely prepares graduates to incorporate healthy nutrition into classical cuisine, manage food service operations focused on nutrition needs, and integrate culinary arts into the hospital, extended care, and school food service operations, along with the hospitality industry. The Culinary Dietetics Track has the identical goals and objectives as the Dietetics Track; the two tracks differ only with regard to completing the culinary certificate.

Some students transfer to IUP after completing an accredited culinary program. Others complete their freshman year on the IUP main campus, then transfer to the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts for their sophomore year, and return to the IUP main campus for their junior and senior years. The externship required for the culinary certificate is completed between the junior and senior years. Students considering the Culinary Dietetics major should visit both the Department of Food and Nutrition in Indiana, Pa., and the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts in Punxsutawney, Pa. Please visit the Culinary Arts website for more details.

Dietetics TrackThe Department of Food and Nutrition offers a combined dietetic internship and Master of Science in Food and Nutrition. Upon completion of the dietetic internship, the student may take the national Registration Examination to become credentialed as a registered dietitian.

*Please note: the completion of the Bachelor of Science program does not guarantee acceptance into a supervised practice program such as a dietetic internship.
