The Hispanic Heritage Council is committed to fostering the appreciation and understanding of the Hispanic culture through an outreach of efforts:

  • Raise awareness of the Hispanic culture and Spanish language on the IUP campus by hosting and commemorating Hispanic events.
  • Serve as a networking help resource center for Latino students in order to retain them on the IUP campus and help them succeed in their studies at IUP.
  • Encourage Latino students to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Council and help them develop leadership skills through a tutoring and mentoring program.
  • Promote academic diversity on the IUP campus.
  • Raise community awareness of Hispanics and/or diversity via involvement in the sponsored events.

The Hispanic Heritage Council serves as a dynamic resource group that promotes diverse Hispanic participation across the campus. The council works in partnership with the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement at IUP. Thus, its purpose is to create awareness that makes a difference in diversity.

IUP Hispanic Heritage Council Sponsoring “Noche Latina” on Saturday, October 16, 2010

The IUP Hispanic Heritage Council is sponsoring a special celebration to observe the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. This event, titled Noche Latina, is on Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Ohio Room of the Hadley Union Building.

Noche Latina is about bringing everyone together to embrace the Hispanic culture. The night will be filled with talent displays, poetry readings, dancing, Hispanic food, and lots of fun!

Tickets are $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Office of Social Equity and Civic Engagement in B17 Delaney Hall.

Spring Celebration/Fundraiser Event for IUP Student Berenice Lopez Gomez—April 10, 2010

The Hispanic Heritage Council will host a Spring Celebration/Fundraiser for an IUP student, Berenice Lopez Gomez, who is suffering from kidney and liver failure. Berenice is currently in the Hershey Medical Center undergoing dialysis and is in need of a kidney transplant. Her family has no medical insurance. Update on Berenice's Medical Condition.
