We recommend that you review the videos and instructions for formatting your thesis/dissertation before you start to write. The links below will guide you through the most common features of Microsoft Office Word and Adobe Acrobat. Samples of the title and signature pages are included for your reference.

Help with Formatting Your Thesis/Dissertation

IUP has established standards for the layout of the front matter of theses/dissertations. Review the samples below carefully to ensure your document complies to the standards.

Please refer to the Thesis-Dissertation Manual for additional guidelines on formatting your thesis or dissertation.

Workshops

  • Formatting Your Thesis or Dissertation (PowerPoint with sound; open file, select Slide Show) – Join graduate assistants Amy Klemm and Julia Grove for a workshop on formatting theses and dissertations. The workshop video covers APA and MLA style guides and highlights the layout of the pages required by IUP.
  • Formatting Your Thesis or Dissertation (PPT) – A PowerPoint presentation version of the workshop with active hyperlinks.

Help with Using MS Word

The short videos and instructions below cover the most common features of MS Word that you will use as you write your thesis/dissertation.

  • Word 2007 Tutorial 1 (video) – A ten-minute tutorial covering the basic features of MS Word 2007.
  • Word 2007 Tutorial 2 (video) – A seven-and-a-half-minute tutorial covering the tools you have for formatting text. Features covered include formatting font, font size, color, format painter, cut, copy, paste, paste special, highlighting text, and the font dialog box.
  • Creating a Table of Contents in Word (video) – A three-minute tutorial that shows you how to use Word 2007 to generate a table of contents for a document.
  • Dot Leader Instructions – Instructions for manually creating a table of contents using the dot leader feature in MS Word 2003 and 2007.
  • Creating a List of Tables in Word – Instructions for producing an automatic list of tables similar to the table of contents generated by MS Word 2003 and 2007.
  • Line Spacing Adjustments in Word (video) – A three-minute tutorial that shows you how to adjust the line or row spacing in a document in Word 2007.
  • Changing Margins in Word (video) – A three-minute tutorial that shows you how to adjust the margins in a document in Word 2007.
  • Page Break and Section Break Instructions – Instructions for adding page and section breaks to control page layout in MS Word 2003 and 2007.

Help with Using Adobe Acrobat

You will submit your thesis/dissertation electronically in PDF format. The video and instructions below will guide you through converting your Word document into a PDF file.
