Technical Best Practices

One of the advantages of using a content management system is that it can take care of many of the technical aspects of website creation automatically.

However, a few technical issues will always remain. We cover them here.

Use HTML Content
Always use HTML content unless there is a very good reason not to.
Don’t Open New Windows
It is possible to make links open up in a new window. Don’t do it.
Don’t Delete Content Blocks: Reuse Them
Try to repurpose rather than delete.
Before Deleting, Do a Link Search
Before deleting a webpage, it’s best to make sure that no other pages on the IUP site are linked to it.
Use Quicklinks for CMS Content
When linking to content on the CMS, use a quicklink, every time.
Use Styles and Structural Elements According to Their Meaning
Use the available styles and headings to indicate the meaning of your text.
Don’t Use Tables for Layout
Use HTML tables for data, not columns and layouts.
Use a Supported Browser for Editing
If you are a web maintainer, make sure you use the right browser.
