Chemistry Student Life

In the FOG

The student affiliate of the American Chemical Society has been part of the Chemistry Department for as long as most can remember. Members consist of any student interested in science. The students involved in the ACS are involved in tutoring, weekly meetings, liquid nitrogen shows at local schools, and free tutoring for the department. The ACS Club members participate in volunteer water sampling of the Penn Hills II and Richards abandoned mine drainage sites near Clymer, Pa. This is a collaboration with the Kiski-Conemaugh Stream Team. When not busy, members challenge the Physics Club in various sports, including football and soccer. The ACS always wins!

Alpha Chi Sigma’s first semester at IUP was in the spring of 2002. Since then, students from science-related majors have joined to become more than just book-toting pupils. Faculty members are also encouraged to join and participate in the fraternal events. Members of AXΣ plan upcoming events at weekly meetings. These events are designed to foster an environment of brotherhood among its members and the department. From “Pi Your Proff” to the Boy Scout Chemistry Merit Badge, the members of AXΣ bring excitement and lifelong bonds between its members.
