Dr. Catherine Raeff is the registration officer for the Psychology department. Her office is located in 301 Uhler. Her e-mail address is craeff@iup.edu. You can also contact the department chair, Dr. Pavloski (pavloski@iup.edu), if you have any registration questions. This document is lengthy but important. Please read it carefully.

The Winter 2009 and Spring 2010 class schedules are now available for viewing on URSA. Registration for the Winter 2009 intersession online courses will begin on October 24; PINs are not required for Winter intersession registration.

Initial registration times range from October 20 to November 13. You should contact your academic advisor to prepare for scheduling. All advisors have received registration materials and will post sign-up sheets outside their offices.

First-year psychology majors who are assigned to Dr. Meil as an advisor should make an appointment with the Psychology Department Academic Development Center, located in Room G-8 Uhler. For current sophomores, juniors, and seniors: If you don't know who your advisor is, you can check the list available on the department bulletin board just outside 109 Uhler Hall. This list is also available on the Psychology Department website.

Continuing Education students will begin registering on October 20; Priority groups will register from October 21 to October 22; Freshmen (28 credits or less) will register from October 23 to October 29; Seniors (91 credits or more at the end of this semester) will register from October 29 to November 4; Juniors (57-90 credits) will register from November 5 to November 10; and Sophomores (29-56 credits) will register from November 10 to November 13.

Time appointment notices and alternate pin numbers will be available initially only from your advisor. After you have chosen your initial Fall schedule, you will be able to access your Alternate Pin Number through URSA.

Special Note: Do not postpone registration. First, you lose out on available seats. Second, you will now pay a late registration fee of $100 to $200, depending on just how late you are.

Because a number of department courses require special admission procedures, i.e., requests for departmental permission, please read the following information carefully. If you have any questions, get in touch with Dr. Raeff (301 Uhler, 357-2422, or craeff@iup.edu). Permission request forms for labs will be available outside Dr. Raeff’s office beginning October 5, 2009. Submit your requests as soon as possible after that date regardless of when you schedule.

PSYC 290: You must have completed or be currently enrolled in MATH 217 to enroll in this course. You do not need to fill out a department permission form for PSYC 290. But, if you have some special problem concerning PSYC 290 registration, you should make arrangements to contact Dr. Raeff. Note: If you enroll in PSYC 290 and do not pass MATH 217, you will be disenrolled (removed) from PSYC 290 until such time as you have passed MATH 217.

Core Area F: Two sections of PSYC 411: Psychology of Women will be available for Spring 2010.

PSYC 480 : Restricted to members of the Honors Program; you must fill out a closed section request form. The form is available from Dr. Raeff, 301 Uhler Hall.

PSYC 483 : Honors Thesis—Restricted to members of the Honors Program. Note: You and your honors project advisor must also fill out a request for Independent Study form for each of the two semesters of your independent study project.

PSYC 493 (Practicum): The names of students admitted to Practicum will be submitted by Dr. Newell. You do not need to fill out a request for a closed section permit. You can add the course to your schedule after Dr. Newell gives you permission to do so.

Special notes regarding PSYC 291, PSYC 341, PSYC 342, and PSYC 356

Seniors graduating in May 2010 are guaranteed admission to courses needed to graduate. This guarantee does not assure that you will get your first choice, only that you will get the courses you need to graduate. Students graduating at other times may also fill out a request. Your name will be placed on a waiting list, and if seats are available you will be permitted to enroll. Students will be enrolled based on graduation date, i.e., first, May 2010, then August 2010, etc. Special Note: The guarantee of a seat in the labs expires on November 5, 2009, for seniors graduating in May 2010. At that time, protected seats will be released to the August/December 2010 seniors.

PSYC 291 : You must pass PSYC 290 with at least a C grade to be admitted to PSYC 291. If you register for PSYC 291 but do not receive at least a "C" grade in PSYC 290, you will be disenrolled from PSYC 291.

If you are currently in PSYC 290, you will receive a special request form for admission to PSYC 291; these forms must be submitted by the close of business on October 13. Section assignments will be posted on Dr. Raeff’s bulletin board, 301 Uhler Hall.

If you are not currently enrolled in PSYC 290 but you plan to take PSYC 291: 1) You must fill out a closed section request form. 2) Department policies give priority to students currently enrolled in PSYC 290. Your name will be placed on a waiting list, and if seats become available, you will be notified. Fill out the request form available outside Room 301 Uhler and give it to Dr. Raeff or slip it under the door, 301 Uhler Hall. If there are any problems, you will receive an e-mail message from Dr. Raeff.

Core Area D: Two sections of PSYC 341 (Conditioning and Learning) and two sections of PSYC 342 (Human Cognition) will be offered in Spring 2010.

Request Procedure: Fill out the request form available outside Room 301 Uhler and give it to Dr. Raeff or slip it under the door, 301 Uhler Hall. If there are any problems, you will receive an e-mail message from Dr. Raeff. If you are requesting a lab course and you are not graduating in May or August 2010, remember that Dr. Raeff will contact you by e-mail. Request forms will be available on October 5. You will be able to schedule the course after a special permit has been issued. To register, you must schedule the course yourself. We can give you permission to enroll, but we cannot actually enroll you in any course. You are not automatically enrolled simply because you have a permit or override.

Core Area E: One section of PSYC 356 (Biopsychology) will be offered in Spring 2010. (A special, temporary change in this core area requirement has been made for seniors graduating in May/August 2010, allowing PSYC 356 to fulfill the core-area laboratory requirement.)

Request Procedure: If you are graduating in May/August 2010, you should have received an e-mail about Core Area E and a request form for PSYC 356. Fill out the form and e-mail it to craeff@iup.edu, or submit a hard copy to Dr. Raeff in 301 Uhler Hall. Additional copies of the form will be available outside of Dr. Raeff’s door on October 5. You will be notified by e-mail when the permits have been issued. To register, you must schedule the course yourself. We can give you permission to enroll, but we cannot actually enroll you in any course. You are not automatically enrolled simply because you have a permit or override.

Final reminder for seniors graduating in May: Initial registration times for seniors run until November 4, 2009. The guarantees regarding seats needed to graduate in May 2010 expire on that day. That is, we will begin admitting other students to the protected classes (e.g., labs) on November 4. If you are graduating, make sure you fill out your closed section requests as soon as possible beginning on October 5.

One final note: When you attempt to register, you will be asked if you wish to participate in a campuswide emergency notification system (currently called Reverse-911). If you say "yes" and provide the required information, you will not be asked again at subsequent registrations. If you answer "No," you will be asked every semester when you attempt to register, i.e., you will have to opt out during each registration period. The purpose of the system is to have a means of providing members of the campus community with information about any emergency which might affect the campus. Most of the time, this would involve a call to a cell phone. Please think carefully about your choice.
