A Homecoming Concert
Sunday, October 11 • 3:00 p.m.
Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center
The IUP Concert Band, Symphony Band, and Wind Ensemble open their season with a tribute to one hundred years of British and American band music, including works by Leonard Bernstein, Paul Creston, and Adam Gorb, with featured soloists the HoodleBug Brass. The concert, under the direction of Jack Stamp and Jason Worzbyt, also features the world premiere of “Tour de Force” by IUP alumnus Jim Self.
The HoodleBug Brass
Tuesday, November 17 • 8:00 p.m.
Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall
The HoodleBug Brass, named in honor of the local trail that now follows the old HoodleBug rail line from the edge of the IUP campus to Homer City, is comprised of a quintet of IUP faculty brass musicians. In recent years, the HoodleBug Brass has performed locally and nationally and recorded Off the Trac’s. Music for brass spanning four centuries is planned for this distinctively different crowd-pleasing performance.
Holiday Music Festival
Sunday, December 13 • 3:00 p.m.
Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall
The IUP choral ensembles, under the direction of James Dearing, perform a wide range of new, international, and traditional music of the season in this annual holiday favorite. The concert also features the HoodleBug Brass. For a completely festive experience, bring the family and then—as the sun begins to set—point yourself towards Blue Spruce Park for that evening’s Festival of Lights display.
A Finale: Festival of Women Composers
Saturday, March 20 • 8:00 p.m.
Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center
Our internationally recognized Festival of Women Composers concludes with a performance by the IUP Wind Ensemble of works by women composers, including Nancy Galbraith, Jennifer Higdon, Joan Tower, and Kathryn Salfelder, conducted by women conductors, including IUP graduate Kristin Tjornehoj, director of bands at the University of Wisconsin—River Falls. Choral ensembles will also perform African-American spirituals arranged by guest composer Rosephanye Powell.
An International Exchange in Music
Wednesday, March 31 • 8:00 p.m.
Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall
Guest artists Juan Hermida and Misa Ito join IUP faculty musicians Linda Jennings and Therese Wacker for a truly extraordinary performance with international flair. A husband and wife duo, Hermida and Ito are on the music faculty at the University of the Americans in Puebla, Mexico. Hermida, cello, is a native of Mexico, while Ito was born in Japan. Jennings, cello, and Wacker, flute, will join the duo for a program that includes works by Zyman, Mamiya, Marquez, Dello Jo Io, and Menotti. This concert is part of the IUP College of Fine Arts’ continuing commitment in providing valuable international experiences for our audiences, students, and faculty.
Chorale and Orchestra: All-Haydn
Sunday, May 2 • 3:00 p.m.
Gorell Recital Hall, John Sutton Hall
For a brilliant season finale, the IUP Chorale, under the direction of James Dearing, and the IUP Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Stanley Chepaitis, offer up an all-Haydn concert. The program will include Franz Josef Haydn’s Symphony Number 103—the famous “Drumroll” Symphony—and the “Maria Theresa” Mass written for the Queen of Hungary and Bohemia and Holy Roman Empress, who died in 1780.
