“I loved the campus and I kind of fell in love with IUP because of the distance from home.”

One of six children, Isis Lester was thrilled when her acceptance letter to IUP Punxsutawney arrived in the mail at her Philadelphia home.

“I’m from the inner city of Philadelphia, and all I ever heard were ambulances and sirens and cars. The house is always loud with kids.

“And now, I love it. That was the environment change I wanted. I can always go back home to the noise. But being here just brought me some peace.”

Isis went to an all-girl school back home and was told by her high school teachers that college would be hard. To her surprise, it wasn’t that bad, she said.

“I loved the fact that the classes weren’t that big and the teachers knew you by your name. The smallness is the best part about it. It gives you a chance to study.

“Our academic center was right down the street. I thought, ‘Wow, I’m never going to be late to class.’ I mean there’s no reason when it’s only five minutes away.”

As a Business Management major, Isis hopes her love of people will serve her well when she’s able to open her own business. Isis was given a partial scholarship to attend IUP, and she realized early on how important her involvement in her own education would be.

“The classes are intimate, and that’s a good thing. You can’t get lost in the mix. I took advantage of those professors’ office hours because I figured, ‘Hey, I’m paying for this, so I might as well get the most of it.’”

Isis was one of the first to live in the new residential suites on the Punxsutawney campus. She describes herself as a social person who enjoys hanging out with friends.

“Even to this day, in the Oak Grove, if I’m walking across and see someone from my year at Punxsutawney, we’ll wave across the Grove. We were just really tight.

“With Facebook, we made the Punxsy group of ’05. We had our own song. We all stick together. That’s what you get when you come to Punxsy. You become the Punxsy family. It’s just different.”
