Three-Step Process

Please Note: Currently the department is not accepting new majors in French. If you are interested in studying French, consider a minor in French.

What is the Three-Step Process?

Like all the candidates in Teacher Education at IUP, you will go through three checkpoints as you progress through the Secondary Education/French Program. These checkpoints are summarized below. Be sure to read carefully the documents from the College of Education and Educational Technology office which outlines the requirements and procedures for each step, as well as your French Education Student Handbook.

In addition to the requirements established by IUP’s College of Education and Educational Technology, the Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education/French Program has language-specific requirements which you must meet in order to obtain approval for each step:

Step 1: Application for Teacher Education

  • A minimum of 48 credit hours and a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Successful completion of Praxis I Exams (PPST) with the minimum score established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Each exam may be taken only twice.
  • Completion of the following courses with a grade of “C” or higher: ENGL 101, ENGL 121, EDSP 102, COMM 103, and six credits in Mathematics (Level 100 or higher)
  • Act 34/Act 151 clearances (valid for one year) — Act 114 FBI Fingerprinting (valid for five years)
    (*Continuing enrollment in IUP Teacher Preparation Program is required for clearances to remain valid)
  • Completion of Speech, Hearing, and TB test
  • Proof of Liability Insurance (annual update required)—PSEA membership or private insurance (Must have a minimum of $1,000,000 per claim/aggregate of $3,000,000 per occurrence if obtained via private insurance.)
  • Satisfactorily completed essay
  • Reviewed evidence of starting an Electronic Portfolio—include CD and Portfolio Evaluation
  • Advisor’s recommendation and signature

Additional French Education Step: Mid-Program Review

  • A minimum of 60 credits
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in FRNC courses required in program (to be maintained through graduation)
  • EDUC 242 Pre-Student Teaching I with “C” or better
  • Attainment of Intermediate-Mid rating or higher on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview
  • Successful completion of English essay
  • Successful completion of interview in English (includes review of “Professional Involvement Log”)
  • Updated Electronic Portfolio review
  • Advisor’s recommendation and signature

Step 2: Application for Student Teaching

  • Successful completion of Step 1 and Mid-Program review
  • Maintenance of a cumulative GPA required at the time of your admission to the Teacher Education Program (currently 3.0 both overall and in FRNC courses required in program)
  • Successful completion of PRAXIS II Fundamental Subjects Test (The Praxis cut-off scores must be at or above the current PDE established score at the time a candidate applies for Pennsylvania Teacher Certification.)
  • Proof of Liability Insurance—PSEA membership or private insurance (Must have a minimum of $1,000,000 per claim and an aggregate of $3,000,000 per occurrence if obtained via private insurance.)
  • Act 34/Act 151 clearances (updated)
  • Completion of all major courses, methods courses, and liberal studies science courses with a grade of “C” or higher
  • Updated Electronic Portfolio review; include CD and Portfolio Evaluation
  • Attainment of Advanced-Low rating or higher on the Official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test, according to published deadlines
  • Successful completion of “Professional Involvement Log”
  • Advisor’s recommendation and signature

Step 3: Applications for Graduation and Pennsylvania Teacher Certification

  • Successful completion of Step 2
  • Successful completion of Student Teaching, including all departmental requirements
  • Maintenance of cumulative GPA required at the time of your admission to the Teacher Education Program (currently 3.0 both overall and in FRNC courses required in program)
  • Final review of the Electronic Professional Portfolio, including CD and Portfolio Evaluation
  • Completed application for graduation
  • Completed application for Pennsylvania Teacher Certification
  • The recommendation of your academic advisor
  • The recommendation of the IUP Teacher Certification Officer
