IUP will provide IUP-owned materials, books, and articles to the Maryland Safety Science cohorts. These will be mailed directly to the student’s home. Requests for such materials can be made through the Maryland Safety Science webpage. The students will be responsible for the timely return of IUP books to the IUP Libraries via UPS.
For articles only, if IUP does not own the publication, the students may submit an ILLiad request for such materials. Whenever possible, this material will be provided to the student electronically.
Standard interlibrary loan policies do not allow us to forward books borrowed from other institutions.

Off-campus users must enter their sixteen-digit I-Card number to gain access to these databases, unless you have your Virtual Private Network (VPN) turned on.

IUP Libraries
The primary resource for distance education users is the IUP Libraries webpage. The webpage provides links to all of the IUP Libraries’ books, videos, media materials, and electronic resources. This is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
Online Catalog
The Online Catalog, PILOT, lists all book and media material owned by the IUP Libraries. The catalog also includes listings for serial titles available in the Libraries.
Databases
The Online Databases button of the Library webpage provides access to over fifty bibliographic and full-text databases. Users will find citations to books and periodical articles, abstracts of articles, and (in many cases) full-text articles on a wide range of subjects.
Reference Services
IUP librarians are available for consultation about any information need. For distance education users, there are two ways to contact the Reference faculty:
- Chat Reference
Distance Education users may receive assistance through the Chat Reference service link on the webpage. Users may enter a chat session with a reference librarian. If a reference librarian is not available, users may enter a question via e-mail. All questions will receive a response within twenty-four hours.
- Telephone Reference
The IUP Libraries provide a toll-free telephone number to talk directly with a reference librarian. The number is 866-836-8815. Reference service is provided during regular hours. Consult Reference Library Hours for current times.
Electronic Reserve
Occasionally, professors place course materials with limited circulation “on reserve” in the library. Many of those materials are also scanned and made available through the Electronic Reserve.
To access E-Reserve, users must enter their I-card identification number, the course number, and the last name of the professor. To view E-Reserve items, the user must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software loaded on the computer. The E-Reserve page contains a link for downloading this free software.
