The Chemistry department offers the Master of Science and Master of Arts Degree in Chemistry. The Master of Science degree requires an original thesis, while the Master of Arts degree is based largely on course work. Students may specialize in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, polymer chemistry, or biochemistry. Students enrolled on a full time basis typically complete the program in two years.
M.A. candidates are required to take the same four core courses as the M.S. candidates, and 2 S.H. of chemistry seminar (CH 600). The remaining 16 credits are elective. Any electives not in chemistry must be approved by the graduate committee.
Research Facilities
The IUP chemistry department possesses a wide variety of modern instrumentation. Graduate students have access to the following equipment; a multinuclear FT-NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, Zeeman AA, GC, HPLC, lasers, scintillation counter, a photodiode array spectrometer, as well as numerous microcomputers.
Financial Support
Teaching assistantships are available for graduate students admitted to the master's program. Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis for a nine-month period. The remuneration includes a stipend and remission of all tuition for the academic year and summer. Summer support may be available depending on the availability of grants, scholarships, or state and federal work-study funds.
Special graduate assistantships are available for minority graduate students. Remuneration includes an academic year stipend and remission of all tuition for the academic year and summer.
