Virginia Ann Deem Memorial Scholarship Awards

The following eight students received a 2012-2013 Virginia Ann Deem Memorial Scholarship award:

Jennifer BergeyJennifer Bergey, a Clearfield native, is the wife of Kevin R. Gergey and daughter of the late Francis L. Beauseigneur and Nancy L. Beauseigneur of Curwensville.

Bergey, 41, plans to graduate in May 2013. She is a Journalism major. She plans a career in public relations.

Inspired by hard work and dedication, Bergey landed an internship in public relations/event planning at the Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Johnstown, Pa.

Bergey is secretary of the Public Relations Student Society of America, a member of the Non-traditional Undergraduate Student Advocacy Team, and a student writer for IUP’s Media Relations.

“It is an honor to be selected among so many other deserving students,” Bergey said.

 

Shawna McCutcheonShawna McCutcheon, of Shelocta, is the daughter of Kathleen P. Schrecongost and the late Danny Johnston.

McCutcheon, 40, plans to graduate in May 2013. She is a Journalism major. She plans a career in public relations.

“I’m thrilled to have won this scholarship. With the state government decreasing the amount of funding for higher education, scholarships are a great way to help fund my education,” McCutcheon said.

 

Elyse ShirleyElyse Shirley, of Indiana, Pa., is the daughter of Rob and Linda Choiniere.

Shirley is a Journalism major and also majors in English and Spanish.

 

Charlene S. Wilson-AdamsCharlene S. Wilson-Adams, of Tyrone, is the daughter of Linda Adams and Charles Wilson.

Wilson-Adams, 19, plans to graduate in May 2014. She is a Journalism major with a minor in Dance. She plans a career in journalism and writing.

Wilson-Adams referred to the scholarship as a “blessing. This scholarship will help me a lot, I am so grateful.”

 

Jacob WilliamsJacob Williams, of Matamoras, is the son of James and Theresa Williams.

Williams, 18, plans to graduate in May 2014. He is a Journalism major and a Communications Media minor. He plans a career in journalism with a possible focus on new media.

Williams is the president of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and will be editor in chief for the campus newspaper, the Penn, for the 2012–2013 year. Williams also hosts a radio show on the campus radio station, WIUP-FM 90.1, on Friday mornings and contributes reporting to a news radio show on WIUP-FM called The HawkEar. In addition, Williams is on the Dean’s List and has a 4.0 GPA.

“It is an extreme honor to receive such prestigious awards in the name of people that contributed so much to a field that I love so much. I hope that one day I can accomplish just as much,” Williams said. “Without the support of my family, friends, and mentors, I would never have made it this far.”
