Helping Families Break the Cycle of Neglect and Violence, Part II

Steve Simms, Ph.D.

Professionals working with neglect and violence sometimes get hooked by their concerns for safety and in doing so take over the parent’s executive functioning. This inadvertently reinforces the power of professionals and can marginalize the family. A videotaped “in the trenches” application of this family-based approach will illustrate how collaboration rather than expert-centered care helps families change the way they relate.
