Self-Study 2013–2016

Self-Study 2013-2016 is a key component of IUP Middle States Accreditation 2016, our decennial university accreditation review by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Everyone in the IUP community, on and off campus, is invited to contribute thoughts on the progress the university has made since our 2005 accreditation.

What does IUP do well? Where is improvement needed? Self-Study addresses all aspects of university life: academic programs, faculty/staff expertise, campus life, facilities, university governance, financial stewardship, community partnerships, and more.

Watch for many ways to share your views--e-mail surveys, public forums, comment areas on published documents, and others--and participate. Your views are vital to IUP Middle States accreditation.




Self-Study Timeline

Pre-Review: Steering Committee Forms; Pre-Planning Begins
Spring 2013
  • Steering Committee Formed
  • First meeting of Steering Committee May 7, 2013; model for MSCHE review discussed
Summer 2013
  • Self-study organizational model chosen
  • Chairs of Subcommittees selected; early appointments made to Subcommittees
  • Some draft research questions created by Co-Chairs and Chairs of Subcommittees
  • SWOT analysis survey to Steering Committee members
  • Data point person identified/early data collection begins
  • IUP Middle States website created
  • Draft Communications plan created
Year 1: Subcommittees Form and Work Begins
Fall 2013
  • MSCHE 2015 Review Process communicated to IUP community; Relationship of MSCHE process to IUP strategic planning initiatives outlined
  • Early data collection continues
  • Steering Committee Responsibilities
    • 2013–2014 Steering Committee meeting schedule set
    • MSCHE Process Timeline reviewed and approved
    • Discussion of possible overarching themes for 2015 Self Study
    • Finalize Self-Study Research Design; Research Questions for Subcommittees finalized
    • Communication plan reviewed and finalized
  • Subcommittees form; volunteers requested from IUP community
  • Initial meetings of Subcommittees (October):
    • Subcommittees receive research questions from Steering Committee
    • Subcommittees create research questions for inclusion in Self-Study Design; submit to Steering Committee for final approval and inclusion in Self-Study Design
    • Subcommittees establish meeting schedules
  • Self-Study Design finalized by Steering Committee before December 15
  • Self-Study Design sent to MSCHE staff liaison by December 31 (will be revised in Spring 2014 during visit from MSCHE Staff liaison)
Spring 2014
  • Site visit by MSCHE Staff liaison to review Self-Study Design; revisions made
  • Subcommittees request Data and begin analysis
  • Subcommittees create Study Proposals and submit to SC by April 1
  • If surveys are part of Study proposals, subcommittees submit survey questions to SC by April 1
  • SC begins evaluation of Subcommittee Study Proposals (April-May)
Year 2: Data Collection and Analysis by Subcommittees/Creation of Draft Self-Study Report
Fall 2014
  • Subcommittees continue to collect and analyze data
  • MSCHE Master Survey conducted via Qualtrics to IUP community
  • Subcommittees submit drafts of Chapter Outlines to Steering Committee by December 1
Spring 2015
  • Subcommittees finalize data analysis
  • Subcommittees present findings to SC before finalizing chapters
  • Completed Chapters due from Subcommittees to SC by April 1
  • Steering Committee makes recommendations to Faculty writer by May 15
Summer 2015
  • Faculty writer synthesizes recommendations and drafts Self-Study report

Year 3: Creation of the Final Report and On-Campus MSCHE Team visit
Fall 2015
  • Steering Committee reviews and responds to Self-Study Report Draft
  • Faculty Writer revises Self-Study Report draft
  • Self-Study Report (revised draft version) shared with IUP Community
    • Open forums (October)
    • Self-Study Report on IUP MSCHE website with forum for collecting feedback
  • Evaluation Team Chair reviews Self-Study Report (revised draft version)
  • IUP Board of Trustees reviews Self-Study Report (revised draft version)
  • Final Self-Study Report approved by Steering Committee before November 15
  • Final Self-Study Report Submitted to MSCHE by November 30 (at least six weeks before MSCHE Evaluation Team site visit)
  • MSCHE Evaluation Team Chair visits IUP campus (December)
Spring 2016
  • MSCHE Evaluation Team site visit 
  • MSCHE sends its evaluation report to IUP
Summer 2016
  • Evaluation of MSCHE report by IUP
  • IUP response to MSCHE report
