The Academic Affairs mission is consistent with the university mission to "serve students from across the nation and around the world by introducing them to and sustaining them in a culture of high aspiration and achievement so they may lead productive and meaningful lives.” Education is the foundation of an enlightened and prosperous society and IUP’s mission is to offer advanced educational opportunities to all who are qualified to enter the university.

IUP’s strength lies in its people. Its faculty are very knowledgeable and deeply committed to teaching, advising and working with their students at all stages of their academic careers. They are supported by competent staff and administration who provide essential academic support functions that include academic governance, the library, administrative and instructional computing support, long-range and strategic planning support and enrollment management. Together, faculty, administration and staff carry out the university’s primary charge to provide quality education to their students.

Academic Affairs emphasizes a strong liberal arts education as the core for its undergraduate instruction. Building on that foundation, Academic Affairs encourages its faculty to employ the latest interactive teaching strategies and tools to hone the student’s skills and expertise in specialized programs of study at both undergraduate and graduate levels through the doctorate. The primary goal is to expose all students to the world of today, raise their awareness of intercultural diversity and prepare them to be active leaders and contributing members of a 21st century global society.

The Academic Affairs mission is to provide support, encouragement and recognition to its faculty who actively engage in scholarship and research to advance the frontiers of knowledge. IUP students are enabled to learn and grow by working with faculty who mentor them in their pursuit of new knowledge. Additionally, Academic Affairs contributes to the betterment of the society it serves with the research endeavors of its faculty.

In addition, the Academic Affairs mission is to provide ample and varied outreach opportunities for the citizens of Pennsylvania to improve their lives by engaging in life-long learning for both professional career and personal enrichment. The strength of a community and the state lies in maintaining an educated and informed populace. Academic Affairs is committed to contributing to that goal.
