Internal (IUP) Funding for Graduate Student Research

IUP offers a variety of funding opportunities for graduate student research. Please direct all questions on these funding opportunities to Jean Serio by e-mail at or by phone at 724-357-2439.

Graduate Student Research Grant

This fund was created to encourage and support graduate students as they undertake research and creative projects that will contribute new insights in their chosen academic field. The maximum amount of the grant that students may receive in support of their research project, creative project, thesis, or dissertation research is $1,000 per year. Applications for support must reflect excellent academic scholarship and must carefully follow the proposal guidelines for funding consideration. The student must be enrolled at IUP during the term of the award. Two grant competitions are held annually; proposals are due the first Monday in November and the first Monday in February. See Graduate Student Research Grant Guidelines.

Graduate Student Travel to Present Papers

This fund supports graduate students currently enrolled in a doctoral or master’s program who are presenting papers at professional meetings. Doctoral and master’s students may apply for up to $750 in funding for the fiscal year by completing the appropriate application. Forms must be typed and accompanied by a presentation abstract. Adobe Pro is required to type and save the PDF forms. If you do not have Adobe Pro, please use the Word form.

Please read and follow the guidelines outlined in the Instructions for Reimbursement for Travel to ensure proper reimbursement. The guidelines describe how students must submit a completed Travel Voucher and other materials to their departments. To see how to complete the voucher, see Travel Voucher Sample.

Graduate Student Professional Development

Graduate students can apply for up to $300 to support their participation in scholarly and creative activities that add to professional development in a significant way. Funds for multiple applicants to participate in a shared activity will be divided among the qualified applicants. The graduate student must provide a clear description of the proposed activity, explain how it adds to his or her scholarly development, and, if other IUP students are involved in the proposed activity, the applicant’s unique role and unique benefit from participation must also be described. As part of the application, a faculty member must describe the importance of the activity as it relates to the student’s scholarly goals and educational progress. Examples of eligible activities include serving as a moderator, discussant, or session chair at a disciplinary conference; presenting research methodology for feedback at a roundtable discussion at a conference; or leadership activities related to professional or disciplinary associations. Simply attending a conference, while a valuable learning experience, is not eligible for support. Support to individual students will not exceed $300 per academic year. See Graduate Student Professional Development Fund application and instructions.

Graduate Student Publication Costs

Costs associated with the publication of articles in scholarly journals, which pay no royalty or fee to the author, will be funded up to a limit of $500. These costs include: article submission fees, reasonable photographic reproduction fees, and page charges. This policy does not extend to any writing for which the student receives compensation or to vanity press charges. See Graduate Student Publication Reimbursement Instructions and Application.

Graduate Student Outstanding Research Award

The School of Graduate Studies and Research recognizes graduate students who have completed what their academic departments believe to be outstanding research projects during the academic year. Three to five $100 awards are made, on a competitive basis, to graduate students each spring, following the review of a faculty nomination letter and a completed proposal. Awards are presented at the annual university-wide Research Awards Luncheon. View Outstanding Research Award submission instructions.
