Julie Bernstein Engelmann

Julie Bernstein EngelmannVisual Arts • Painter

Vibrant color, rich textures, and mystifying surprises are the focus of Julie Bernstein Engelmann’s abstract paintings. She believes that art opens the eyes, mind, and spirit and nourishes one’s sense of beauty, meaning, and purpose. Julie teaches students to recognize and achieve color harmony; enjoy the excitement of paint, its lush tactility and “happy accidents;” consider how they know when a painting is good; and most especially express themselves through the personal and universal visual language of color and form. Also skilled in realism, Julie often incorporates imagery into her artwork and teaching.

Julie earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiber and painting from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude from Barnard College in New York City, where she studied with first-generation abstract expressionist Milton Resnick. Her broad and varied background includes rigorous color training as a textile colorist on Fashion Avenue and working in galleries in New York City, Salt Lake City, and at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. She has served two terms as president of the Indiana Art Association and as vice president of the Indiana Arts Council.

As a widely exhibited painter, Julie’s artwork has won many first place and best of show awards in Western Pennsylvania. Her work is included in the Greater Latrobe School District Special Collection and in several corporate collections. She is represented by La Fond Galleries in Pittsburgh, and is a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.
