Alpha Tau Delta (ATD)

ATD is a national professional fraternity for nurses. ATD promotes academic, professional, and social growth. There are scholarships, grants, and merit awards awarded annually to students and individual chapters to plan educational, professional, social, and philanthropic programs.

To qualify, a student must be enrolled in a baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degree program in an accredited school of nursing. The student must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Annually this organization selects a local community agency as its philanthropic endeavor. IUP’s chapter has been actively involved with fundraising for the American Heart Association (Heart Walk) and Big Brothers and Sisters (Volleyball and Midnight Bowling). Our philanthropic agencies have included the Open Door and the Alice Paul House. The faculty advisor for this organization is Dr. Michele Gerwick.

Sigma Theta Tau

Sigma Theta Tau is the International Honor Society of Nursing. Students may apply for membership to the Zeta Lambda Chapter after completion of one half of the nursing component of the baccalaureate curriculum. Candidates are recommended by the Eligibility Committee and elected by the chapter membership.

The Zeta Lambda Chapter Counselor is Dr. Lisa Palmer.

Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP)

SNAP-IUP is a division of the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania, which is a constituent of the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA). SNAP-IUP is open to all nursing majors and is designed to enhance education, political, and community awareness.

IUP has an active SNAP chapter, and members are involved in current legislative nursing issues, social and service projects, informative programs, and opportunities for interaction with nursing majors across the state and country.

Membership for the local chapter is free. The National Student Nurses Association determines national membership dues. Students who become members at the national level are automatically awarded state membership and are permitted to attend state and national conventions.

The faculty advisers for SNAP-IUP are Dr. Theresa Gropelli and Johanna Boothby.

Nurse’s Christian Fellowship (NCF)

Nurse’s Christian Fellowship (NCF) is a professional organization and a ministry for nurses and nursing students. Membership is open to all nursing students, professional nurses, and nursing faculty within the IUP community. Meetings are usually held twice a month and include a time of fellowship, prayer, and Bible study. The faculty advisor for this organization is Mrs. Edie West.

Class Officers

Students may run for a class officer during the sophomore level. Class officers are responsible for planning and organizing group activities and fundraising projects. Some of the group projects include a senior dinner dance and the departmental graduation ceremony. The class members select a faculty member as the class advisor. Consider running for a class position—this is an excellent opportunity for leadership experience!

Student Advisory Committee

Any nursing student can attend Student Advisory meetings, but each class will have only two elected voting members. Each class selects these representatives. This committee meets at least once a semester.

The faculty advisers for SAC are Dr. Theresa Gropelli and Johanna Boothby.
