In order to participate in any field experience, including Professional Sequence I, Professional Sequence II, and student teaching, students must have up-to-date clearances. These clearances are ACT 32 Criminal Background Check, ACT 151 Child Abuse History Clearance, tuberculosis screening, and Speech and Hearing Clearance.

ACT 34: Criminal Record Check

This is a check of any possible criminal record of an individual and is performed by the Pennsylvania State Police. There is a $10 fee for this background check, and the process requires about six weeks to complete. This clearance is good for one year and must be renewed and must be valid at the time a field experience begins.

ACT 151: Child Abuse History Clearance

This is a check of national databases for any history of child abuse. There is a $10 fee for this background check and the process requires about six weeks to complete. This clearance is good for one year and must be renewed and must be valid at the time a field experience begins.

Tuberculosis Screening

Pennsylvania law requires that anyone working in a school must be screened for tuberculosis. This screening can be done at the University Health Service or by any licensed physician. Once this screening has been done, it is valid for the entire time that a student is enrolled in Teacher Education at IUP.

See the University Health Service website for information about TB test dates for the current semester. You may also contact the health service by phone at 724-357-2500 or by e-mail at health-inquiry@iup.edu

Speech and Hearing Clearance

All prospective teachers must undergo a speech and hearing screening prior to any field experience. Once this screening has been passed successfully, it is valid for the entire time that a student is enrolled in Teacher Education at IUP. The screening can be conducted by the Speech and Hearing Clinic at IUP (724-357-2451 or kstein@iup.edu).

Screenings are conducted in Room 263, Davis Hall.
