Profile

Gian has two major strands to his research agenda: narrative theory and technology. Gian’s chief interest in narrative is in using story forms for reporting research. He is also interested in using stories tools for teaching and learning. He has written about these ideas in various forums and also published a book on the topic titled Living the Narrative Life: Stories as a Tool for Meaning Making (Heinemann Boynto/Cook). Along with his book, Gian has written and published a number of creative non-fiction pieces, especially about his Italian-American upbringining. These stories include “Moscatello Wine” and “The Italian Dentist.” Gian has also published a children’s book of folk tales called Don't Count Your Chickens! Stories for Kids to Tell!

Gian’s interest in technology developed during the five years he worked as a professional technical writer. Gian also has two books forthcoming with Hampton Press on technology, Re-mapping Narrative: Technology's Impact on the Way We Write and TechCulture, Literacy, and the Academy. All of this work in technology and narrative has taught Gian the power of writing, both for personal discovery and for helping students get jobs, something he regularly devotes time to when he teaches Technical Writing.

Gian's favorite thing to do when he's not teaching is to play with his two wonderful sons, Cormac and Loughlin. He also likes to give presentations on integrating writing and mathematics with his beautiful wife, Edel Reilly, who is a middle school mathematics teacher at Westmont Hilltop Middle School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Gian is originally from Platteville, Wisconsin, so he is naturally a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers football team. He also has a great interest in fantasy genres, from comic books to Dungeons & Dragons to science fiction. Gian is also a Macintosh computer devotee and a member of Dogbert’s Ruling Class.
