Qualifying Evaluation (Degree Candidacy)

C&T Qualifying Evaluation — the Qualifying Portfolio

Full details about the Qualifying Evaluation appear in the Qualifying Portfolio Guidelines and are provided in ENGL 800, the first course taken by all doctoral students.

Doctoral students must submit their Qualifying Portfolios in January or February following their first Summer or semester and must pass the Qualifying Evaluation in order to continue in the program with course work and dissertation. For students who begin the Ph.D. program in the Summer, portfolios are usually due in early January. For students who begn the Ph.D. program in the Fall, portfolios are due in mid-February. Exact dates will be announced by the graduate director. The portfolio must be received in the English Graduate Office by the deadline. It may be delivered in person or mailed to the English Graduate Office, Leonard Hall room 111, 421 North Walk, IUP, Indiana, PA 15705 USA. After the C&T office receives the portfolio, the office will add two additional items: instructor evaluations (one for each course taken) and a current grade report.

The C&T graduate director provides students with the Qualifying Portfolio guidelines in ENGL 800. Please follow the guidelines you received from the C&T director.
