Stuart Moskowitz, a lecturer in the Humboldt State University Mathematics Department, will be presenting a Teachers Teaching with Technology™ (T³™) Short Course at IUP on November 7–8. The course will focus on the use of the TI-73 Explorer graphing calculator in the mathematics classroom. You do not need to have a TI-73 to participate.
There will be three separate workshops:
- Friday, November 7, 6:00–9:00 p.m. — workshop for secondary mathematics education majors
- Saturday, November 8, 9:00–11:00 a.m. — workshop for faculty/teachers
- Saturday, November 8, 12:00–4:00 p.m. — workshop for elementary and middle preservice students
Topics to be covered include:
- Estimation Games—more activities for developing number sense
- Does it End or Repeat?—fraction/decimal sense
- Take Me to Zero/Space Invaders Game—learning about place value
- Introduction to the TI-73
- Compound Interest— calculators make guess/check an even better strategy
- Grading Scales – use the TABLE to convert raw scores to percents
- The Gambler’s Fallacy – simulating streaks
- Why aren’t There More Reds? – analyze color distribution of M&M’s
- Disappearing M&M’s – exponential decay
- Collect All 6 – a probability simulation
- Do You See What I See?—Make pretty pictures and learn spreadsheets and algebraic transformations
- Dazzling Drawings—more pictures, this time using the DRAW menu
- Apps on the 73 – SMILE, and Area Formulas
- Intro to Stats on the TI-xx
- Across and Around—discovering PI
- Working with Lists on the TI-73
