Hello everyone. We, Dr. Carse and Dr. Masiello, are excited about the upcoming Annual English Undergraduate Conference, scheduled for March 19, 2008, at the HUB at IUP. from 9am to 6pm. We have begun planning this event, and we need YOUR proposals for presentations, discussions, readings, and other kinds of performances that will be interesting, enlightening and delightful for your fellow students. The conference offers you the opportunity to exchange a variety of ideas in a variety of formats and to showcase your work as English majors. Such an activity will not only give you a solid line on your resume but also give you a chance to share your work with an audience of professors and fellow English majors.
We hope that you will send us the attached proposal form with your ideas. Proposals aren't due till mid-February, but it's never too early to start thinking about what you might submit. If you have any questions about completing the form, please let either of us know (wcarse@iup.edu or lmasiell@iup.edu). So send on your ideas--feel free to email us to brainstorm about possibilities if you like. And talk to your fellow English majors about possible collaborate presentations. The dept. website should soon contain more info on the conference, including tips for presenting and programs from past conferences.
Also--we need a title for the Conference itself, so if you have any ideas, send them on!
General Information
Your presentation can take one of various forms, including:
- Reading a critical essay or creative work you've produced
- Sharing a collaborative project you created for a previous class or are creating for a current class
- Conducting a panel discussion on a particular issue
- Leading a workshop on a teaching or writing technique you've explored or studied
So talk to your professors about potential papers or projects to present, talk to classmates about collaborating on a presentation, and talk to peers who have experience with conference presentations!
Conference participation--presenting or organizing--is wonderful experience, whether you plan to go on to graduate school or start a career immediately; it's the stuff of great resumes!
Past IUP English Conferences
The IUP English Department has hosted many excellent conferences over the years. Every spring the department hosts its annual conference for English majors, minors, and graduate students. The goal of the conference is to provide English students with an opportunity to make professional presentations. Students present papers, readings, and performances based on course projects and independent research projects.
