The Labor Center developed a wide range of materials on workplace safety and health nearly fifteen years ago. The material included posters, brochures, and videos with an emphasis on chemical right-to-know, and workplace health and safety committees. Currently an objective of ours is to update and reissue chemical right-to-know materials such as brochures and posters and distribute them upon request. IUP will be initiating discussion with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry about updating two of our videos: Worker Right to Know and Working Safely—Joint Labor Management Safety Committees. We are available to provide training to groups of workers to meet the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard. We invite inquiries from workers, union representatives, or workplace supervisors interested in developing strategies to solve health and safety problems in the workplace.

Please contact James Watta for inquiries.

Rights-to-Safe-Workplace Poster

OSHA created a workplace poster for informing employees of their rights to a safe workplace. Employers are not required to replace the posters they already have, but they must post the OSHA notice of employee rights in a prominent place.  The new poster tells workers in plain language that they have a right to a safe workplace, how to file a formal complaint, report an emergency, seek OSHA advice and their right to confidentiality. Contact the Labor Center with questions about this poster.

Doing Asbestos I Can

The article “Doing Asbestos I Can” first appeared in the autumn issue of the Heatpath, the quarterly publication of the Insulators and Asbestos Workers, Local 2. It was written by its editor and former rank-and-file worker Bill Yund.

At the heart of safety and health issues are the workplace hazards and their consequences to workers. Yet, we seldom hear their side of things. This is Bill's story of health monitoring for asbestos exposure.
