Do you want to study English as a Second Language before pursuing your bachelor’s degree at IUP? Do you need to pass the TOEFL test before starting an undergraduate degree program?
An international student can be provisionally admitted to a bachelor’s degree program if all of IUP’s admission requirements are met except for the required TOEFL score.
Students can study at the American Language Institute at IUP until they are ready to continue on in a degree program after receiving the required TOEFL score.
Please complete the IUP application for undergraduate study as an ALI Provisional applicant. After you log into your application account, select ALI Provisional from the drop-down menu. There will be a $150 fee for this application. All inquiries about this program should go to the American Language Institute at ali-inquiries@iup.edu.

Other Required Documents
You will need to submit these documents to the IUP Undergraduate Admissions office.
- Foreign Student Financial Statement: All international undergraduate students are asked to show that they have enough money to cover the cost of two semesters at IUP on the financial statement, as well as provide a bank statement or letter from their sponsor for the first year at IUP.
- Official transcripts from high school or other secondary school. If you have completed classes at a college or university, you must also send those transcripts. These documents must be in English and have the official seal of the issuing college or university.
Shipping for Admissions Packet
You also need to decide how you want to receive your admissions package.
- We strongly recommend that you choose express mailing for your admissions package. This is the fastest and most secure way to receive your documents, and you will be able to track their location once they have been shipped. Instructions for using the University Express Mailing Service are explained on the ALI application page.
- If you do not select express mailing, your materials will be sent by airmail. Airmail can take six to twelve weeks to arrive, and no tracking is available.
