The IUP Police bicycle patrol unit was formed in 1994. Currently, seven University Police officers patrol university grounds on bicycles, with at least one bike officer on each shift. The bicycle patrol officers have advanced training from the International Police Mountain Bike Association and wear highly visible uniforms. Bike officers patrol on Giant, Cannondale, or specialized mountain bikes which have been customized for police use. Bike officers have the same patrol responsibilities as other officers and also participate in campus and community education on bicycle safety. IUP bike officers have also assisted other universities in starting a bike patrol program.
