Writing Center FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Writing Center at IUP Punxsutawney.

Who works in the Writing Center?

The Writing Center is currently staffed by Dr. Lynn Shelly, graduate student Katie Hynes, and peer tutors. Dr. Shelly has many years of experience in teaching writing and in working with writers one on one.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No appointment is necessary. The Writing Center staff invites you to stop by during center hours. If you would like to make an appointment, simply sign up on the clipboard on the wall outside the center. Appointments can be made up to two weeks in advance. Around mid-term and just before finals week, the Writing Center may be busy. During these times, we suggest you make an appointment to be sure that you get the time you want.

What should I bring with me to the Writing Center?

If you’re working on an assignment for a course, it’s always a good idea to bring a copy of the assignment sheet and/or course syllabus. You’ll get more specific feedback if your tutor clearly understands what it is that you are working on. It’s also a great help if you bring any notes, brainstorming, outlining, or drafting relevant to the assignment.

Is my visit to the Writing Center confidential?

Yes. Writing Center sessions are entirely confidential, and conversations about your writing remain between you and the tutor. At your request, however, your tutor will fill out a Faculty Report Form. This form is designed to notify your professor that you worked with a tutor and to briefly summarize the session.

If you have additional questions about the Writing Center or want more information about events and activities, e-mail Dr. Lynn Shelly, Lynn.Shelly@iup.edu, or Katie Hynes, mnbt@iup.edu.
