Professional Experience and Interests
Dr. Lowery’s interest in student affairs began at the University of Virginia where he was very active in University Union working with concert promotions and managing a DJ service. After UVA, Dr. Lowery went to the University of South Carolina’s Student Personnel Services Program. After graduate school, he served as university judicial administrator at Washington University in St. Louis. He spent one year at Adrian College as director of Residence Life before entering the doctoral program in Higher Education Administration at Bowling Green State University. During his final year of his doctoral studies, Dr. Lowery served as a visiting instructor in BGSU’s College Student Development Program. After completing his Ph.D. in 2000, Dr. Lowery served on the University of South Carolina’s faculty for six years and coordinated the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. He also served on the faculty at Oklahoma State University for two years. Dr. Lowery joined the SAHE faculty at IUP in August 2008.
In additional to his professional experience, Dr. Lowery has been very active in professional associations. He was a member of the 2006 NASPA Conference Committee. He served on the board of directors for both NASPA and ASJA. In recent years, John has presented at numerous conferences including ACPA, ASJA, the Donald D. Gehring Academy for Student Conduct Administration, NASPA, NACA, and the NASPA/Stetson Student Affairs Law and Policy Conference. Dr. Lowery serves on the Board of Contributors for About Campus. He has also coedited a 2005 special issue of the NASPA Journal on legal issues and judicial affairs, served as an About Campus Department editor, on the NASPA Journal Editorial Board, and as a reviewer for the College Student Affairs Journal and Oracle.
In August 2009, John joined the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM) as an affiliated consultant. NCHERM is a law and consulting firm dedicated to best practices for campus health and safety. NCHERM emphasizes best practices for policy, training, and educational programming as proactive risk management. NCHERM specializes in advancing culture change strategies and problem-solving for the challenging wellness, compliance and liability issues colleges and universities face today.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lowery has been honored by several organizations. In 2007, he was recognized by the Higher Education Administration doctoral program at BGSU as the alumnus of year in “recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession through teaching, research, and service.” He also received the 2007 ASJA D. Parker Young Award for “outstanding ongoing scholarly research contributions to the fields of higher education and student judicial affairs.” The USC Student Personnel Association recognized his contributions in the classroom awarding him the 2006, 2004, and 2001 Faculty Member of the Year awards.
