Inspector: Applying Styles and Formatting Images

One of the biggest changes in the new editor is the Inspector, located via the small arrow in the black box at the upper right of the Workarea.

Locating the Inspector

Paragraph styles in the InspectorIntroduction Style

To apply styles such as Introduction or indentation, place your cursor anywhere within the first paragraph, then click the Inspector arrow. A menu will slide out (right).

Click on the appropriate style to apply it to the selected text. (The type of options displayed in the Inspector is shown by the Elements title at top. “Element: P” is for paragraphs. “Element: IMG” is for photos and other images.)

Styles cannot be applied to portions of paragraphs, only to entire blocks of text.

Note: The Inspector menu can be opened before or after selecting the text or image. An open Inspector menu will lay on top of other windows, such as a library of images. This may block the view of the X in the corner of the other window. In this case, just click the Inspector arrow again to close its menu.

Aligning an Image

After placing an image, click the Inspector button to open the Inspector. Then, click on the image once or twice until the Image elements appear. See the screencap below for a sample image with the Inspector:

The height and width are automatically filled in. (Do not change these numbers. Remember that all images must be resized before uploading into Ektron, not from within Ektron.) Edit the title and alt fields so that they describe the image (these descriptions should match). This is required for accessibility reasons—these descriptions will be read aloud by computer screen readers for people with vision impairment.

Step 1

After selecting the image, scroll to the bottom of the Image Elements menu in the Inspector. Choose left- or right-aligned image under “Style Selector.”

Step 2

Click on the image once more (the class field will then show the same alignment).

Changing the Image

To change the image from within the Inspector, click the image so that it is selected. From the Image Elements menu, click the blue Library icon, located under the “src” field (for “source”). Choose the appropriate image from the library window. (As always, only double-click the image filename or the image itself. Do not double-click on the little yellow box.)

The Inspector also shows what styles are being used in the content. When the Inspector menu is open, placing the cursor within the content will show what styles are applied to that piece of content, plus what other styles are also available.
