How I became interested in Psychology
I started out as a theater major, and I minored in psychology to learn more about what makes people do what they do. Through my first psychology classes, I developed an interest in therapeutic interventions, particularly for children, in order to help people as early as possible.
Areas of Interest
Parenting, including how parents think about their children’s behavior and factors that impact parental decision making. I am particularly interested in the impact of parent mental health issues on parenting and children’s outcomes. I am also interested in evidence-based assessment and intervention with children across the age range.
Current Research and Professional Projects
With my colleague, Lisa Newell, I received a Faculty Professional Development Council Grant to establish a diagnostic clinic in the Center for Applied Psychology for children suspected of having autism spectrum disorders. The IUP Autism Clinic now conducts comprehensive evaluations of children’s social, intellectual, adaptive, and speech-language functioning in order to make diagnoses and treatment recommendations. In addition, Dr. Newell and I are also working on several projects involving autism spectrum disorders and are collecting data to examine parents’ knowledge and understanding of autism spectrum disorders. Currently, I am also collecting data for a study on college students who are parents and working with several students on dissertation and honors thesis projects.
