IUP Plays Pittsburgh

IUP musicians thrilled an enthusiastic audience at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall on November 2 when IUP presented its third annual IUP Plays Pittsburgh event.

The concert showcased the talents of IUP faculty members and students in the IUP Wind Ensemble, IUP Trombone Choir, the Keystone Winds Brass and Percussion group, IUP Music Theater, and the IUP Marching Band. It also featured a world premiere and a Pittsburgh premiere of performances of works by Richard Danielpour, the 2009–2010 Pittsburgh Symphony Composer of the Year, as well as the world-premiere performance of a composition by IUP student Derek Cooper. Ted Sohier from WQED served as master of ceremonies for the event, which included a dessert reception hosted by President Tony Atwater for all concert ticket holders.

Zahorchak Chosen for IUP Honorary Degree: Dr. Gerald L. Zahorchak, Pennsylvania secretary of education, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree and will present remarks during Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s December undergraduate Commencement ceremony.
Nursing and Allied Health Programs Accredited: IUP’s Nursing programs have been approved for unconditional ten-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Cities Come to Indiana for IUP Homecoming: One of the highlights of IUP’s Homecoming celebration on October 10 was the annual parade.
Van Shura Confirmed as New Trustee: President Tony Atwater and Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell have announced that the state Senate on October 19, 2009, confirmed the appointment of Dr. Mary Esther Van Shura, of Pittsburgh, to the IUP Council of Trustees.
Senate Confirms Mack to PASSHE Board of Governors: The state senate has confirmed the appointment of Jonathan Mack of Indiana to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors.
Eberly College Included in “Best 301 Business Schools”: The Eberly College of Business and Information Technology is included in the Princeton Review’s “Best 301 Business Schools,” 2010 edition.
Helwig Hits Grand Slam: IUP honored award-winning composer, arranger, and conductor Marvin Hamlisch as the seventeenth annual Helwig Distinguished Artist Award recipient for 2009 on October 5.
PASSHE Chancellor Named Vice Chair of National Panel: Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Chancellor John Cavanaugh has been selected to serve as vice chair of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Committee on Policies and Purposes.

Washington Center Honors System: The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has been selected to receive The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars’ 2009 University System of the Year Award.
Coal Culture Final Lectures Set at University Museum: The final two presentations in the series on the region’s coal history, held in conjunction with the University Museum’s “A Walk Through Time: Western Pennsylvania Coal Culture,” have been set.
Common Freshman Reader Author Strickland Presents Personal Story: The author of the 2009 Common Freshman Reader, Bill Strickland, will present his personal story on November 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the IUP Performing Arts Center’s Fisher Auditorium.
Scholarship Recipient: President Tony Atwater and his wife, Beverly Roberts-Atwater, congratulate the 2009 IUP Presidential Scholars Fund recipient, Shelby Kelley, a freshman studio art major from Silver Spring, Md.
Chemistry Club Receives National Award: The American Chemical Society student chapter in the Department of Chemistry was given its second Honorable Mention Award from the National American Chemistry Society for its 2008–2009 club activities.
Pratt Drive Section Converted to Pedestrian Walkway: To improve safety, IUP has converted Pratt Drive between Grant and Locust streets (in front of Wallwork Hall) to a pedestrian walkway. Wallwork Hall was constructed as part of the Residential Revival project, funded by the Foundation for IUP.
