Act 235: Lethal Weapons Training

Act 235 certification, also known as Lethal Weapons certification, is mandatory for all privately employed security personnel who utilize any type of lethal weapon. The Criminal Justice Training Center is a state-certified lethal weapons training and recertification center.

The CJTC’s Act 235 program is an education and training program in the handling of lethal weapons and enables an individual to do armed security. The basic course is forty hours and includes classroom, defensive tactics, and qualification with a weapon at a firing range. An eight-hour recertification course is required every five years.

The CJTC offers basic and recertification courses. The most popular format for the basic course is usually over two weekends: four hours Friday evenings and eight hours each on Saturday and Sunday. The Lethal Weapons Training Commission approves schools that offer the course and certifies instructors.

IUP is conducting a preliminary survey to gauge interest in setting up in an Act 235 Lethal Weapons Training program. If you are interested, please respond by e-mailing jcrawfrd@iup.edu, or contact the Criminal Justice Training Center at 724-357-6943.
