Advising Information
The allied health coordinator is the academic advisor for all students pursuing a gerontology certificate. The student’s major advisor remains a primary advisor and must be contacted each semester for major advising appointments and alternate PINS.
Students are expected to check their IUP e-mail frequently and use their IUP e-mail address when sending e-mail to anyone in the IUP community. Important and helpful information is sent to students from the coordinator, secretary, registrar, and others. Assistance with the use of the IUP e-mail system and other technology support is available at the IT Support Center.

Resources and Information
Core and Elective Courses
Courses other than the approved list may be substituted for core and elective courses, especially when scheduling conflicts arise or when students can provide appropriate justification for substitution. Courses acceptable for substitutions must have a focus on gerontology and be approved by the allied health coordinator and other offices.
Internship
Students may elect to complete the internship in the student’s major. For example, PSYC 493 Psychological Practicum completed as part of a student’s psychology program may fulfill the gerontology internship requirement. A major focus of the internship must relate to gerontology. The allied health coordinator works with the student to select appropriate sites and learning objectives.
Students may also consider registering for GERN 493 Gerontology Internship to fulfill the certificate requirement. In this case, the allied health coordinator typically provides faculty oversight of the practicum experience.
Students are required to complete approximately 120 clock hours over the semester for the three-credit internship. Selected readings and weekly logs are typical internship assignments.
Potential sites for the internship experience include, but are not limited to:
