Geography Major 

A major in Geography at IUP begins with a core of six classes. These include major foundation areas in the subject: mapping, spatial activities of cultural and economic geography, and the historic background of our discipline, plus an opportunity for research in the field.

Three tracks provide specialties for you to become a professional geographer. These are an Economic Geography Track, an Environmental Geography Track, and a GIS/Cartographer Track; moreover, a fourth choice for the undecided major is the General Geography Track.

Geography Tracks 

Regional Planning Major 

A major in Regional Planning at IUP begins with a core of nine classes. These include major foundation areas in the subject: mapping, spatial activities of cultural and economic geography, the historic background to planning, and an opportunity for research in the field.

The Environmental Planner Track and the Land Use Planning and GIS Track offer fields of study for becoming a professional planner.

Social Studies Education/Geography B.S.Ed.

A major in Social Studies Education/Geography B.S. Ed. at IUP begins with a core of twelve classes. These include major foundation areas in the subject: mapping, spatial activities of cultural and economic geography, the historic background to planning, and an opportunity for research in the field along with Social Science distribution.

The Social Studies Education/Geography B.S. Ed. track offers fields of study to become a Social Sciences teacher.

All eleven faculty members in the department advise majors and sponsor activities related to their research interests and scholarship. You will find their offices on the ground level of Leonard Hall. Please stop in if you would like to learn more about becoming a geography or regional planning major.
