IUP offers the Master of Arts with the following concentrations:
- Students are offered a course of study in music pedagogy, educational learning theory, research and performance, designed to enhance the teaching effectiveness of music educators, especially K–12.
- Students have the opportunity to study with full-time faculty specialists in their performance area.
- Major performance ensembles include orchestra, three concert bands, marching band, three choral ensembles, two jazz ensembles, opera and music theater, percussion ensemble, and various studio ensembles.
- Sub-specialties available in either choral or instrumental conduting.
- Students are exposed to an in-depth study of a broad spectrum of musical styles and compositional techniques. There are opportunities within the department for high-level performance of student compositions, as well as for oversight of student progress by a number of seasoned composers on the faculty.
- Students receive a broad foundation in the history and literature of music, including the European tradition, popular music, and ethnomusicology. Course topics include music information literacy, music theory and musicianship, and seminar courses covering specific periods or cultures.
