M.A. in English: TESOL and Applied Linguistics

The M.A. TESOL program welcomes prospective professionals in the area of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Applied Linguistics from the U.S. and abroad. The program is designed to enrich students’ understanding of praxis in TESOL and Applied Linguistics. The program consists of 36 semester hours of coursework in TESOL and Applied Linguistics.

The program has a rich history of over thirty years of academic excellence and professional accomplishments. It has awarded degrees to students from over forty countries. Its students and alumni have held leadership positions in TESOL and Applied Linguistics programs worldwide. Many have gone on to pursue higher doctoral degrees. Others have become distinguished teachers, curriculum and materials designers, and program directors around the world.

Students from this program hosted the first three TESOL Graduate Student Forums organized by international TESOL. During their studies at IUP, they frequently present at other local, national, and international events. They have won best presenter awards at the Three Rivers TESOL Conference. The M.A. TESOL Student Association (MATESA) regularly holds meetings and educational events for its members. Most importantly, after they graduate, IUP M.A. TESOL students continue their active professional involvement.

The M.A. TESOL faculty includes professionals with established academic and publication records as well as with significant TESOL and Applied Linguistics experience. They serve as role models who provide expert professional guidance to our students. For more information on IUP’s TESOL and Applied Linguistics faculty (as well instructor’s areas of research focus), please visit the Faculty and Staff page. Many of them have held leadership positions in TESOL, AAAL, AERA, and other professional organizations. They are among the founders and greatest supporters of our local Three Rivers TESOL organization.

With its significant historical and current accomplishments, with its diverse and highly motivated student body, and with its dedicated and distinguished faculty, the M.A. TESOL program provides a friendly atmosphere of intellectual creativity and teacher-student cooperation that foster career and professional excellence.
