IUP has long-standing, internationally recognized graduate programs.

Doctoral level

We offer two doctoral programs in English, one in Composition and TESOL and one in Literature and Criticism. Both programs lead to the Ph.D. degree in English. A survey by the Modern Language Association found IUP’s doctoral programs in English to be among the most successful in employment for their graduates.

Master’s level

IUP also offers four different concentrations in its Master of Arts degree in English. The concentrations respond to the specific needs of four groups of students:

  • The M.A. Generalist is aimed at students who are interested in gaining a broad background in graduate English studies.
  • The M.A. Literature is best for students who wish to concentrate on the study of literary works, theory, and criticism.
  • The M.A. Teaching English is for students who seek secondary English certification or who wish to enhance their skills in teaching English.
  • The M.A. TESOL focuses on students who want to teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) either in the United States or abroad.

All of our MA programs require 36 credit hours. The 36 hours consist of course work (twelve courses). A thesis is optional. Each program has its own set of requirements and admissions policies.

Our graduate programs have strong reputations because they involve thirty-two dedicated and experienced faculty members, a culturally diverse population of students, a curriculum that supports teacher-scholars, and high rates of completion.
