The review of your portfolio is an important prerequisite for admission into the varied degree programs of the Department of Art at IUP.
The primary goal of the screening committee is to assess whether your portfolio demonstrates potential for success in professional studies in our art program. Your work will be reviewed on the basis of technical, compositional, and creative skill.
Requirements
The following are guidelines to assist you in preparing your portfolio.
- Twelve (12) to fifteen (15) works created within the last year or two.
- Four (4) of these works should be drawings executed from life and not from a photograph.
- Remaining works should include two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in various media that showcase your strengths. We also recommend including artwork that demonstrates your ability to use color.
- All artwork that is derived from photographs or is computer-generated should demonstrate technical, compositional, and creative skill.
Procedure
Portfolio Reviews are regularly scheduled on Fine Art Days. Please contact the Art Office 724-357-2530 or jlstrong@iup.edu for specific dates. All work must be organized neatly in a single portfolio case which has your name and address clearly written on the outside. Your name should be clearly printed on the back of a 2-D or the bottom of 3-D work. No loose work or rolled work should be submitted. Digital images or CDs of work can also be submitted. This is especially important to show the breadth of your experience to include three-dimensional work in various media or graphic design. Make sure images are of adequate resolution and quality to enable review.
Digital Portfolios
The same requirements apply to all students who choose to submit their portfolios in digital form as to those who submit their portfolios in person with the actual works. We understand in some cases the distance is too great to be able to visit IUP in person, and therefore some applicants may need to submit work in a digital format. Digital work on CD or in print form must be high resolution. We recommend a resolution of approximately 1600x1200 pixels. If at all possible, we strongly encourage you to bring original work to be reviewed by the Review Committee.
Transfer Student’s Portfolio
- Include a total of twelve (12) to fifteen (15) works in your portfolio. Submit your two best works from each studio area you have taken in the school from which you are transferring.
- Include additional artwork that represents your area of greatest strength and interest.
