Dr. David Loomis had a career in print journalism as copy boy, researcher, reporter, columnist, and editor before receiving a 2002 doctorate as a Park Fellow in journalism and mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Loomis brings twenty-five years of journalism and newsroom-management experience into his classes, which include Writing for Print Media, News Reporting, Mass Media in American Politics, Women and the Press, Journalism and Mass Media, Journalism Law, and The Editorial Page.
His writing-intensive reporting classes emphasize his research interest in civic engagement and civic journalism. These classes feature student work with campus and local news media. They provide for students real-world experience with campus and commercial newspapers and produce student portfolios of published clips. His classes have won for students statewide press-association awards for public-service reporting.
Loomis holds memberships in the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, including its Civic and Citizen Journalism Interest Group.
His avocations include playing racquetball, bicycling, and performing gypsy jazz on a Dell’Arte archtop guitar—but not simultaneously.
