Church in GermanyThe German Programs at IUP include the B.A. in German, German for International Trade, and German Education.

The three tracks have as their common thread the development of proficiency in the German language and a knowledge of German culture, literature, and linguistics. In accordance with IUP’s mission of providing students an international study experience, students of German are encouraged to participate in the overseas study abroad in Germany program with Duisburg University, in the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. There they have an opportunity to enhance communication skills while gaining exposure to daily life on a German university campus. The populous city of Duisburg and nearby cities of the Rhine Valley offer an array of cultural experiences including theater, opera, and concerts.

German Program Mission

Students in touch with current events cannot help but notice the prominent role played by Germany in nearly every phase of economic and political life.

Germany has the third largest economy in the world, and along with France is the engine driving the European Union. Since the reunification in 1990, Germany has built bridges to its eastern neighbors and will continue to strengthen trade relationships with them. Though Germany’s own internal growth has spawned problems like unemployment, notably in the eastern states, efforts are underway to assure opportunities in all parts of the Federal Republic.

As Germany consolidates its economic position, it is not surprising that this country remains one of our top three trading partners. In Pennsylvania alone, over 150 firms are subsidiaries or affiliates of German companies. The Bayer firm, with thousands of employees in western Pennsylvania, is but one example of the German presence. In adjacent states, Germany remains a major player in pharmaceuticals, high-tech, and industrial enterprises. The role of other German-speaking countries like Austria and Switzerland is also significant.

A recognition of the role of Germany in the sciences, philosophy, and literature strongly suggests the value of a concentration in German at the college and university level. The study of German along with other skills provides a key to success in graduate work, teaching, and in the business world.
